Agroforestry Training Academy

Event Information

The Agroforestry Academy is an intensive training program for farmers, landowners, and other natural resources and agriculture professionals who are interested in connecting with experienced producers and researchers for comprehensive and experiential agroforestry education. The Center for Agroforestry has offered this educational program since 2013, and the growing network of trainees continues to provide opportunities for learning and connection. The keystone features of the Academy are field visits, hands-on applications, and a case study design exercise.

The 2021 Agroforestry Academy will take place on Canvas, a virtual learning platform, with recorded presentations and extensive course materials; meet-up and consultation sessions with agroforestry professionals, researchers, and experienced growers; virtual farm tours; and networking opportunities

Participants will engage with the course materials and live sessions over four weeks, from July 19 through August 20. Each week, approximately four hours of dedicated time for the course is expected.

The course content includes an overview of temperate agroforestry practices; land access and funding opportunities for agroforestry; planning and design considerations; soil and water conservation and management; perennial tree and shrub crops for integrated temperate systems including chestnut, walnut, pecan, hazelnut, elderberry, pawpaw, berries, forest botanicals, fungi and others; silvopasture installation and management; marketing and economics for perennial crops; and more!

Each week, participants will have the opportunity to meet with instructors and farmers to discuss their plans, progress, questions, and insights. These direct consultation sessions are ideal for those just getting started on-the-ground, for professionals seeking to learn and apply this information in their work, and for

Those looking to expand their network of agroforestry practitioners as mentors.
