Ray was raised on a small farm near his hometown of El Dorado Springs in southwest Missouri. In high school, Ray was active in Vo Ag and FFA, and participated in district and state judging contests. He received a BS degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri. Immediately after college, he began working at the Sinclair Comparative Medicine Research Farm and continued there for 20 years, with 15 years spent as a Farm Supervisor. Ray then worked for Research Support Services (now Field Operations), until receiving the Farm Supervisor position at HARC. Ray has served at HARC for nearly seven years, and enjoys the new challenges each day brings -- especially in the supervision of research support activities and personnel, maintenance of buildings, grounds, machinery, equipment and vehicles. He credits the entire HARC team for meeting research challenges and maintaining a beautiful facility. Ray's goal as HARC continues to develop is to make the farm an even more beautiful and efficient research center.

Agroforestry-related research interests include evaluation of runoff, sediment, nutrient and herbicide losses influenced by vegetative buffer strips. One research project will characterize soil hydraulic property changes under agroforestry buffer strips. Additional research will utilize computed tomography techniques to quantify soil pore size distributions under forest and grass buffers.

Research interests deal with the biology, ecology, and behavior of tree fruit and nut pests. Current agroforestry-related research is directed towards the chemical ecology between host plant and insect pest. Specifically, whether plant volatiles from chestnut can be utilized as effective attractants for the chestnut weevil. If successful, results from the study will aid in the development of sustainable management practices in chestnut plantations and agroforestry systems by providing an effective pest monitoring tactic.

Fungi are among the most influential organisms in forest communities. Nearly all plants require mutualistic root associations with mycorrhizal fungi to survive (e.g., truffle fungi). Another diverse group of fungi is indispensable as nutrient recyclers by decomposing the leaves and wood (e.g., the edible shiitake, oyster, and wine-cap Stropharia mushrooms). Some of these fungi (e.g., the wood decay fungi Armillaria and Heterobasidion) have the ability to begin recycling plants even before they die! Still other fungi have become so specialized that they can only cause disease of living trees (e.g., the oak wilt fungus)! I am interested in improving our understanding of the ecology of these fungi and developing tools for their management. My current research highlights the cultivation of specialty fungi in agroforestry and the ecology and epidemiology of Armillaria in forest decline.

Agroforestry-related research involves optimizing silvopastoral management systems. Walnut and pine plantations are evaluated for their effects on forage production and quality and the subsequent effects of forage grazing on nut production and tree growth. Grazing effects are being studied for both new and established plantings. In addition to forage grazing and tree interactions, dietary supplementation and grazing management are being studied for their effects on forage and tree production.

Agroforestry-related research interests involve screening the best suitable ground cover species for tree-shrub-grass riparian buffer strip to sequester and degrade many herbicides in surface runoff and subsurface flow. In our research project, we investigate the effects of many forage and woody species on transport and transformation of the herbicides. Other studies involve evaluating sensitivity of the many shade tolerant forages to the diluted herbicide in the surface runoff, and the related detoxification mechanisms of these forages. In these studies, concentrations and distributions of the herbicides and their metabolites in the leachate, soil and plant tissues are determined by solid phase or liquid-liquid extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography UV spectroscopy (HPLC-UV), HPLC mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), HPLC tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), HPLC flow scintillation analyzer (HPLC-FSA) or gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS).
