Research interests deal with the biology, ecology and behavior of tree fruit and nut pests. Current agroforestry-related research is directed towards the chemical ecology between host plant and insect pest. Specifically, whether plant volatiles from chestnut can be utilized a effective attractants for the chestnut weevil. If successful, results from the study will aid in the development of sustainable management practices in chestnut plantations and agroforestry systems by providing an effective pest monitoring tactic.

Fungi are among the most influential organisms in forest communities. Nearly all plants require mutualistic root associations with mycorrhizal fungi to survive (e.g., truffle fungi). Another diverse group of fungi is indispensable as nutrient recyclers by decomposing the leaves and wood (e.g., the edible shiitake, oyster, and wine-cap Stropharia mushrooms). Some of these fungi (e.g., the wood decay fungi Armillaria and Heterobasidion) have the ability to begin recycling plants even before they die! Still other fungi have become so specialized that they can only cause disease of living trees (e.g., the oak wilt fungus)! I am interested in improving our understanding of the ecology of these fungi and developing tools for their management. My current research highlights the cultivation of specialty fungi in agroforestry and the ecology and epidemiology of Armillaria in forest decline.

Agroforestry-related research involves optimizing silvopastoral management systems. Walnut and pine plantations are evaluated for their effects on forage production and quality and the subsequent effects of forage grazing on nut production and tree growth. Grazing effects are being studied for both new and established plantings. In addition to forage grazing and tree interactions, dietary supplementation and grazing management are being studied for their effects on forage and tree production.

Lin's primary research involves the use of plants and genetically modified microbes for applications in the area of phytoremediation and bioremediation in agroforestry. Several modern chromatographic and DNA-based techniques have been developed to evaluate the bioremediation capacity of a wide range of forages and woody species for reducing transport and enhancing sequestration and degradation of agrochemicals, veterinary pharmaceuticals, munitions explosives and their degradation products in the vegetative buffer systems. Other active research projects include 1) screening phytochemicals from Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) for development of potential entrepreneurial opportunities, 2) identifying volatile organic attractants from chestnut that has potential application for biological/chemical control of chestnut weevil, 3) investigating the fate of modern herbicides, such as isoxaflutole, in municipal disinfection process, and 4) assessing the effectiveness of vegetative windbreak in reducing transport of malodorous compounds.

Agroforestry-related research focuses on the use of herbaceous perennial species in silvopastoral management systems. Prairie and savanna species native to Missouri and the Midwest and introduced species such as alfalfa are being evaluated for yield potential, development, forage quality and nitrogen fixation under shading. The potential for commercial seed production of tall fescue in alley cropping is being evaluated. Tall fescue is also being studied to determine why it is so detrimental to tree establishment. Flood tolerance of forage plants is being evaluated in a field laboratory located at the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center.

Fungi are influential members of forest communities. Most plants require beneficial mycorrhizal fungi to survive such as truffles (Tuber species). Other fungi recycle forest debris such as shi'itake (Lentinula edodes), oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus species), and the morels (Morchella species). There are also fungi such as the honey mushroom (Armillaria species) and the hen-of-the-woods (Grifola frondosa) which can begin recycling trees even before they die because they are parasites. Throughout my career, I have studied the ecology of fungi. My current research highlights the cultivation of the gourmet truffle fungi for agroforestry. I am also interested in the ecology of morel mushrooms with the goal of enhancing natural fruiting. Another important aspect of my research focuses on the ecology of forest fungi such as Armillaria species, with particular emphasis on their capacity to produce light, a process termed bioluminescence.

Research centers on the study of vertebrate population ecology at three scales: physiological processes, individual space use and resource selection and population-level dynamics. Many of these topics overlap within individual studies and include several themes. At each scale, he focuses on rigorous development and evaluation of field, laboratory, and statistical methods and application of these methods to help answer important conservation issues. His research has focused on large mammals, but increasingly he works with other taxa to address questions of interest.

Research:

Disturbance ecology of oak dominated forests

Teaching:

Forest Ecology, Forest Health & Protection, Forest Ecology Field Studies

Specific Emphasis:

Dr. Muzika's research emphasizes disturbance ecology; particularly long-term changes in forest composition and processes as influenced by both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Current research efforts within the broad topic of disturbance ecology include the effects of non-indigenous organisms on forest succession and the role of silviculture in moderating such effects. In an attempt to predict the resilience of specific forest types to disturbance, other ongoing research includes studies of the variability of recovery from disturbance and the influence of ecosystem type on the success of establishment of exotic organisms. Understanding plant species distribution and abundance, pre-settlement vegetation, interactions of climate and disturbance, and assessing site-related tree growth and stand development represent other fundamental questions of interest.

Chris's primary research interest is in methods to improve survival and establishment of woody plants after transplanting to the field. Based on research at HARC, a low-tech hydroponic system called the "Missouri Gravel Bed" has been developed that allows bare root trees and shrubs to be planted any time of the year with outstanding survival. This technique shows excellent promise for facilitating Agroforestry planting operations. Other interests include the commercial production of pine needles in Missouri for use as landscape mulch and composting of on-farm-produced chips of silver maple for use as a soil amendment or potting soil.

The primary objective of my research is to quantify environmental benefits of agroforestry. Currently, I am conducting research on influences of agroforestry and grass buffer on water and soil quality. In addressing this issue I am examining how trees and grass buffers change surface and subsurface water quality by reducing runoff, nutrients and sediment when intercropped in rowcrop agriculture. Changes in soil physical properties, soil water dynamics, competition for resources, root length density, nutrient accumulation, and microclimate are being evaluated in an agroforestry alley cropping practice. Soil carbon sequestration, cattle grazing impact on water quality, and prairie restoration are some of the areas in which I have conducted research. Recently, I used X-ray computed tomography to quantify soil porosity, distribution of pores, pore connectivity, and tortuosity as influenced by agroforestry and grass buffers.

Research

In three of every five years, low temperatures eliminate or reduce fruit crops in Missouri. In response to this, Dr. Warmund conducts research on low temperature stress of horticultural crops. Her research program on apple and peach rootstocks serves the Missouri fruit industry. Dr. Warmund's rootstock research focuses on evaluation of pome and stone fruit rootstock field performance and improvement of rootstock propagation techniques. She also works on nursery production problems affecting the release of new plant material. As State Fruit Extension Specialist she works with commercial fruit producers focused on developing and providing educational materials for fruit and nut growers to increase production efficiency and thereby increase profitability. She also is involved in establishing and maintaining demonstration research plots to illustrate innovations in the fruit and nut industry. Dr. Warmund is contributing her pomological expertise as a collaborator on the UMCA chestnut and black walnut research program. Currently, her chestnut research projects include the development of primary and secondary burs and cultural practices to manage crop load, use of dwarfing rootstocks and interstems for high-density production, and graft incompatibility in Chinese chestnut. Black walnut studies focus on dwarfing rootstocks, the chilling requirements for flowering, sensory attributes of various cultivars, the seasonal development of the kernel, and the characterization of kernel necrosis and shriveling.

Professional interests include riparian ecology, management and restoration, especially in agricultural landscapes, hydrology and soils, agroforestry. Research emphasis focuses on the design and function of riparian management systems that reduce the movement and remediate the impact of non-point source pollutants from croplands and pastures to adjacent streams. Presently we are also studying the impact of riparian buffers on stream bank stability and quantifying the proportion of stream sediment that originates from bank erosion and surface erosion. Most of our buffer designs use perennial woody and forb species that are functionally effective and provide potential alternative income to land owners. An area of study includes quantifying the biomass production potential of buffers for carbon sequestration and use in the burgeoning bio-energy field. Research activities focus on vegetative propagation of hardwoods and the management of the vegetation within hardwood plantings and several agroforestry practices. Although part of a research team that developed the procedures for black walnut micropropagation, his research is now directed at the propagation of superior hardwood trees through rooting of cuttings. Increasingly, his research centers on benefits of incorporating native or forage legumes in tree plantings or the use of woody nurse crops to control grasses and other undesirable ground cover vegetation.
