Activities

Musical entertainment was provided by the Ironweed Bluegrass Band. Executive Chef Eric Cartwright of the MU Dining Services conducted a cooking demonstration and prepared three unique chestnut dishes on the stage. Tours available throughout the day included walk-through tours of the newly rehabilitated 1819 Thomas Hickman House, bus tours of the farm, and guided walking tours of the research areas and the new vineyard. Several demonstrations were set up at the event including a Wood Mizer Saw, and a wood artist demonstrated how to make specialty wood bowls using a lathe.

Free samples of fresh roasted chestnuts were available throughout the day in the Agroforestry Center booth and many of the producers had free tasting samples of their products including wines; specialty beers, chestnut, pecan and black walnut products; apples; nut candy and snacks; artisanal chocolate; goat cheeses, mustards; honey; elk meat products; green chili products; and many other gourmet products. The New Franklin High School Athletic Boosters Club members operated the food concession tent and sold grilled elk, buffalo, and beef burgers and brats.

Activities for the children included a Chestnut Roast Fact Hunt and a straw bale maze. The MU Enns Museum staff operated a children’s activity booth that featured face painting, Madagascar cockroach races and edible insect sampling.
